Dunkin Doughnut Winners!

Well done to Layla and Paras for winning the box of Dunkin Doughnuts.Ā  I know that everybody’s mouths were watering when they saw the boxes in the Pride of Plover Assembly this morning, including my own.

A huge shout out goes to everybody in Year 5 and 6 as there were lots of entries.Ā  Nearly everybody had at least one raffle ticket, meaning children who are at home and in school have been reading.

Keep up the awesome reading!

Due to success of this competition, we have decided to run the competition again! There will be a winner from each class and every time you read (and quiz for those children in KS2) in school or at home, you will be entered into the draw!

You have from Friday 26th February until Thursday 26th March to enter. Winners will be announced in Pride of Plover assembly on Friday 27th March, with the winners bringing their boxes of donuts home from school with them!

Good luck everyone!

More gorgeous Expedition work!

Shang’s presentation

A shout out to Shang and Jasmine for sharing their gorgeous Expedition work with me today. I am so impressed with the efforts you have both put in. Jasmine has created a flow chart on how coal is formed and Shang has created some slides based on the day in the life of a child miner. I am so proud of you both girls- well done and please keep it up!

Our mining expert visitor!

We are so lucky to have been able to have a Q&A session with Mr Taylor who worked down the mine in Rossington for 15 years. He shared all of his experiences, stories and he answered all of the questions the children had. We found out what job role he had, the hours he worked, the conditions he worked in, what he enjoyed the most and much more! The children learnt so much and were so hooked in!

Thank you Mr Taylor!

And the winners are…

Every time a pupil passed a quiz on Accelerated Reader their name was entered into a prize draw to win a box of Dunkin Doughnuts.Ā  The staff in Year 5/6 were pleased with the amount of quizzes that have been passed over the last few weeks – however there can only be two winners.

I am delighted to announce that Paras in Year 5 and Layla in Year 6 are our winners and they will be receiving their doughnuts in school tomorrow.Ā  I hope they are sharing with me.

Well done to everybody who entered the competition and please keep reading and quizzing.Ā  Now which class is going to be at the top of the league on Friday?Ā  #LovePlover!

Today, years 5&6 had an exciting zoom call with the author of our anchor text ā€˜The Skry pit kidsā€™ -Jacqueline Bellew.
Jacqueline discussed the inspiration behind writing the book and the children had lots of opportunities to ask questions about the text. They really are enjoying the text so much and it was amazing to have the opportunity to talk to the author!

Sponsored walk for mining memorial!

Well done to all the children in 5/6 who are completing, or have already completed the sponsored walk to raise money to add a plaque to the Armthorpe miners memorial. Any donations no matter how big or small are greatly appreciated and will help us leave a lasting legacy from Plover children at the memorial.

You still have time to join in if you havenā€™t already and there will be a prize for the child in each class who raises the most money.

Thank you to everyone for their support in this event. We really appreciate it. Please remember to send pictures/videos of your walks to [email protected] so we can celebrate your achievements of this Expedition.

We are historians!

Wow, year 6’s have been busy today! They have researched the jobs which children (some much younger than them) did down the mines. They were shocked and saddened to hear that some children as young as four went down the mines to be trappers. They then took the information they had researched and presented it in a variety of ways. Some chose to create YouTube videos, some chose to create slides and some chose Padlet. The children were so engaged in today’s lesson that they have asked if they can continue to work on their presentations tonight. Here are some examples below (more will be celebrated as they are completed). Well done you lovely lot! I am so proud of you all and I can’t wait to hear all about your research tomorrow!

World Book Day

World Book Day will be celebrated in school and at home on Friday 5th March. We would love all children to get involved in the fun. This year, the theme of World Book Day will be ‘Books That Make You LOL’. We would like to invite all children to dress up as a character from a book that makes them laugh. There will be prizes up for grabs for the most creative efforts put into a costume.
There will beĀ a ‘decorate a potato challenge’ which we inviteĀ everyone to have a go at. You can decorate a potato as a character from any book or even decorate several potatoes if you are making a scene from a book. We also will have a competitionĀ just for fun based on the TV show, ‘The Masked Singer’. Staff have hidden their identities behind books and you will be using the clues to discover who is behind the mask!
Vouchers will be emailed to all parents and carers for the World Book Day Ā£1 books. These will take the place of the normal paper vouchers. Some shops are requesting paper copies of the vouchers so please check before spending the voucher. If you find you need a paper copy but do not have access to a printer, please let your child’s teacher know and they will print you a copy.
We can’t wait to see your costumes and celebrate with you!
