Classification or chaos?

A bit of both if I’m honest!

Grouping animals using scientific terms such as vertebrate, mammal, reptile (and many more) was more tricky than many of us first thought it would be. However, we quickly discovered that it was our understanding of the terms that we were struggling with, not the grouping of the animals. So, we followed our HoWL of Get Smart and used a range of information sheets, as well as some great videos, to help us with our understanding of the key vocabulary.

Now we are able to group animals using their classification group with a lot more accuracy.

Keep using the information around you to Get Smart 3H; and the progress in your knowledge and understanding will be great!

Active Scientific Learning in Year 3

Year 3 have played food chain tag today. Some of us pretended to be grass, which was eaten by those of us who were deer. Then in turn, the deer were eaten by the wolves. Seeing the visual effect of this food chain made us realise that the wolves were the apex predators in this example. The children had fun, got active and learnt lots all at the same time.

Hooking LKS2 into What makes us human?

Happy New Year!

We have had a great start to our new expedition – “The Power of Life – what makes us human?”

It was great to see all costumes in the “dress-up as a robot’, especially all the time and effort that had gone into the outfits.

We spent the morning in our crews in mini workshops to give us a flavour of some of the learning we are going to be doing this term. Children had to workout the guiding question using clues given at the end of each workshop.

Children enjoyed exploring the internal organs, skeleton and muscles using AI and interactive games. They had a go at classifying robots, made electronic circuits, created robots and had fun with jigsaws.

As reward for solving the puzzle and in preparation for Friday’s learning, we spent the afternoon watching the film Robots.

We are problem solvers!

Years 3 and 4 have worked with each of the six crew leads today to carry out a range of activities that link to our new learning. If successful, they were given a word from the crew leader. Then they had to shuffle these words around so they made sense as a title and question. We finally worked it out…

The power of life: What makes us human?

Well done to everyone who managed to complete Mrs Haycock’s challenge of beat the buzzer. Everyone successfully built their wire buzzer (or in our case light) game! Extra shout out to the 6 children who managed to complete the game without setting the buzzer off.

I hope you all had fun in my session guys; I know I had lots of fun and that I am very proud of you all!

Circuits in 6B

6B had a great time grappling with circuits this afternoon. Each group successfully created a working circuit, lighting their bulbs and even powered their propellors. They linked this learning to their current expedition by noticing how solar power is used in space exploration. Great work 6B!

5S Cam Toys

Over the past few expedition lessons, 5S have been demonstrating their knowledge of mechanisms by producing a cam toy which causes a planet to rotate.

They had to carefully build a box which symbolised the blackness of space, paint a ball to a planet of their choice, then assemble an intricate cam and follower mechanism inside which converts the motion into a rotation of the planet.

Well done, the finished products look brilliant!

Year 5 & 6 stargazing ⭐️

Year 5 & 6 had an amazing night at stargazing this evening. They searched for stars and constellations and even had the privilege of working with two space experts who brought in their telescopes! Thank you to Mr Clarke and Adi! A shout out to Rio’s pizzas for our lovely pizza and chips for tea!

Helping our classmates to improve their work

After writing up or scientific report following an investigation into water resistance, I was impressed to see the children using their skills of peer critique to provide kind, helpful and specific feedback to improve their work. A great example of being kind. Well done!

Nursery Are Scientists!

Today we have been scientists and learning to understand the world, focusing on the statement “talk about the difference between materials and the changes they notice”. We explored the dry porridge oats and then made predications on how it might look/feel when we mix them with water. We then made some porridge by adding milk, to taste the oats. Most of us thought the porridge was delicious, but some of us were not a fan.

5S investigating air resistance

5S investigated the effect of air resistance on large sheets of card by running with them held in different positions. Interestingly, we found that the card has more air to move aside when held up, meaning we were not able to run quickly. If we held the card on it’s side, the effect of air resistance was reduced and we could run faster.

We discussed some real life examples such as bicycle helmets and clothing, formula one cars and parachutes and described the advantages of streamlined design.
