And the winners are…

Every time a pupil passed a quiz on Accelerated Reader their name was entered into a prize draw to win a box of Dunkin Doughnuts.  The staff in Year 5/6 were pleased with the amount of quizzes that have been passed over the last few weeks – however there can only be two winners.

I am delighted to announce that Paras in Year 5 and Layla in Year 6 are our winners and they will be receiving their doughnuts in school tomorrow.  I hope they are sharing with me.

Well done to everybody who entered the competition and please keep reading and quizzing.  Now which class is going to be at the top of the league on Friday?  #LovePlover!

Today, years 5&6 had an exciting zoom call with the author of our anchor text ‘The Skry pit kids’ -Jacqueline Bellew.
Jacqueline discussed the inspiration behind writing the book and the children had lots of opportunities to ask questions about the text. They really are enjoying the text so much and it was amazing to have the opportunity to talk to the author!

Sponsored walk for mining memorial!

Well done to all the children in 5/6 who are completing, or have already completed the sponsored walk to raise money to add a plaque to the Armthorpe miners memorial. Any donations no matter how big or small are greatly appreciated and will help us leave a lasting legacy from Plover children at the memorial.

You still have time to join in if you haven’t already and there will be a prize for the child in each class who raises the most money.

Thank you to everyone for their support in this event. We really appreciate it. Please remember to send pictures/videos of your walks to [email protected] so we can celebrate your achievements of this Expedition.

We are historians!

Wow, year 6’s have been busy today! They have researched the jobs which children (some much younger than them) did down the mines. They were shocked and saddened to hear that some children as young as four went down the mines to be trappers. They then took the information they had researched and presented it in a variety of ways. Some chose to create YouTube videos, some chose to create slides and some chose Padlet. The children were so engaged in today’s lesson that they have asked if they can continue to work on their presentations tonight. Here are some examples below (more will be celebrated as they are completed). Well done you lovely lot! I am so proud of you all and I can’t wait to hear all about your research tomorrow!

World Book Day

World Book Day will be celebrated in school and at home on Friday 5th March. We would love all children to get involved in the fun. This year, the theme of World Book Day will be ‘Books That Make You LOL’. We would like to invite all children to dress up as a character from a book that makes them laugh. There will be prizes up for grabs for the most creative efforts put into a costume.
There will be a ‘decorate a potato challenge’ which we invite everyone to have a go at. You can decorate a potato as a character from any book or even decorate several potatoes if you are making a scene from a book. We also will have a competition just for fun based on the TV show, ‘The Masked Singer’. Staff have hidden their identities behind books and you will be using the clues to discover who is behind the mask!
Vouchers will be emailed to all parents and carers for the World Book Day £1 books. These will take the place of the normal paper vouchers. Some shops are requesting paper copies of the vouchers so please check before spending the voucher. If you find you need a paper copy but do not have access to a printer, please let your child’s teacher know and they will print you a copy.
We can’t wait to see your costumes and celebrate with you!

TT rockstars club 3-4pm every Thursday for Years 5&6!

Starting Thursday 25th February, I will be holding a TT Rockstars club via hangout for years 5/6 3-4pm. I know the children are enjoying TT as my account is filled with battle requests! (I will get to the top of that leader board)! I have seen a great improvement of times table knowledge and I really want everyone to keep it up.
This virtual club will be a great opportunity for the children to play with their friends whilst developing their recall of times tables.

I’m really looking forward to starting this club and even more excited to beat you all to the top of that leader board! Game on 5/6! 🤩

Our virtual parliament visit!

Years 5&6 children were given an amazing opportunity to have a virtual visit of parliament. We engaged with two experts who talked us through the roles of MP’s and the houses of commons and they answered lots of our questions! The children were amazing and have taken lots away of knowledge!
Well done you lovely lot!

Leavers Hoodies

As your child nears the end of their primary years at Plover, we would like them to leave with a hoody as a memorable gift.

The hoodies will be navy blue. The reverse will be printed with the names of the Y6 children in the shape of a 21 with the word LEAVERS.

The hoodies are available in sizes 12/13, Adult S or Adult M (smaller sizes are available should you require them). There will be no cost for these hoodies as we have managed to raise enough funds to cover the costs. We would like to give a shout out to Lacey Johnson’s mum (Clare) for all the amazing work she has put into supporting our fundraising.

In order to be able to print the name of each child on the reverse of the hoody we need your permission. If we do not receive your permission, your child’s name will not be included on the logo.

Please can you email your permission along with the required size and your child’s name to [email protected] by Friday 26th February.

Plover school sharing the love 💗
