Describing 3D shapes

Describing 3D shapes Video of lesson

In this lesson, we will look closely at the properties of 3D shapes and talk about them, using new language to describe them.

You will need a tin, a cereal box and other shapes from around your house.

We will be using the words vertices, straight, curved, face and edge. Curved faces are known as curved surfaces. On a cone the vertex has a special name and it is an apex.

Repeat the sentence eg A cube has 6 flat faces.

Look at the shapes of objects in your home. What shapes are they? Can you describe them. If you are green standard compare objects saying what is the same and what is different about them.

3D shape hunt

Finding 3D shapes in the environment Video of the lesson

In this lesson, we will learn the names of simple 3D shapes. Can you find any out and about or in your home?

Start by recapping the names and properties of 2D shapes and make a pattern.

For today’s lesson you will need the shape finder sheet and a pen or pencil. Shape sheet

You will be looking for cubes, cuboids, cones and spheres.

Are there any shapes that you have found that are different to these? Can you name them? They might be a cuboid or a cylinder for example.

Send us photos of your shape hunt.

Describe a real bear

Today we are going to use the information that we have found out about a bear to create a fact file. We are going to start by looking at the fact cards and seeing what information we can find out.
Then we are going to draw a picture of a bear. Choose one of the bears that we have been learning about eg polar bear, sun bear, brown bear. Can you label you bear using adjectives like we did with the Bear Hunt bear.
If you are gold talk about similarities and differences about bears, where they live and what they do.
If you are green talk about how environments are different and make observations about bears and explain why some things happen/change. Talk about similarities and differences of the places where bears live.
We are going to use this information in our writing tomorrow. The second slide is for tomorrow.

The Masked Reader

Take a look at our World Book Day website! Children have looked at the website during Crew this morning. We currently have a lot of excitement in school as children ask one another, ‘Who’s that behind the book?’ Each day leading up to World Book Day, 4 masked readers will be added to the site with clues to their identity. Can you guess who is behind each book?

Are you feeling inspired? Why not send a picture of yourself, with your face hidden behind a book, to your teacher. You could try other ways to disguise your identity too! You can also write your own clues to try and help your peers work out who is hiding!

What do we know about bears?

Today we spent lots of time talking and sharing ideas about bears. We sorted bears by what they eat, where they live and their colours.

This is one of our examples.

We have looked at the world map and labelled where we would find the bears. We are going to use the information to create fact files. I am looking forward to reading them.

Shape pictures

We have been learning about shapes, recognising them, using them and drawing them.

Marnie, Emma and Bobby used the shapes to make shape pictures and tell stories. They were very proud to share them with the class.

Well done everyone.

Making patterns with 2D shapes

In this lesson, we will be making and spotting different repeating patterns. Draw or use natural resources or your toys to create your own repeating patterns.

Video of lesson

You will need three different colour pens or crayons and the repeating pattern sheet.

Use the big picture and talk about the patterns that you can see.

Use the sheet to create your own pattern. Then create a pattern using 3 colours or 3 shapes. If you are green standard explain your pattern using vertices, sides, straight and curved.
