Today LKS2 were excited to welcome a sugar expert to Plover School.
Paul Crystal is a published author and historian and has thrilled us with his knowledge of Why sugar is not so sweet. He shared the history of sugar and how it has been used through the ages.
Did you know sugar was used in medicines? Did you know sugar was rationed during WW1 and WW2? Imagine no sweets or cakes! Did you know that they used to mix plaster and brick dust into sugary sweets?
Did you know that Doncaster is famous for butterscotch? I wonder if you can find the building where Parkinson’s toffee was made and sold in the city centre.

3LS have had a busy couple of days being scientists. We’ve been exploring the changing states of matter through a series of experiments and learning how to work scientifically. Do you know what happens to water and where it goes when you heat it? Have you ever changed jelly into a liquid then back to a solid? Do you know what happens to the bubbles in lemonade when you freeze it?
WE DO!

Barrington has been a fantastic scientist today, hypothesising and experimenting. He has impressed me with the way he has shared his learning and coaching others.

I am pleased to announce that Joseph is this week’s Pride of Plover winner in 3LS. His punctuality and attendance have improved in recent weeks and it’s been lovely to see his enthusiasm for learning.
Keep it up Joseph! Well done!

Today’s postcards went to Barrington and Sumit who both impressed me today with their confidence in sharing their learning with not only the class but also our visitors to school. We’re all really proud of you boys, well done!

Yesterday and today as part of our new Science Case Study, the children were finding out about the different states of matter. They worked collaboratively to create posters on the differences between solids, liquids and gases. We enjoyed debating whether slime was a liquid or a gas. What do you think it is?

Have you ever wondered which kind of sugar dissolves the fastest? Well today we carried out an experiment to find out. First we hypothesised then carried out a fair test and got some surprising results. Children have collaborated to carry out their experiments and looked at a scientific report which shows their results, learning lots of new language along the way. Do you know what matter, particles or states mean?
