Attract or Repel?

3LS have been diving deeper into our expedition today, exploring magnets and properties of magnetic materials. Weā€™ve been predicting and testing which objects will be attracted and repelled by magnets. Did you know that not all metals are attracted to magnets? We found a 1p from 1971 that was not attracted to a magnet and a 1p from 1998 that was. Even more amazingly, we have discovered that magnets can attract objects from a distance and even through other objects! The force can attract a penny through two other coins.

What time is it?

This week we have been learning about time. Today we made our own clocks with moving hour and minute hands. Weā€™re going to bring them home with some home learning and parent guides. It would be great if we could practice telling the time at home too!

Next up we will be adding Roman numerals to our clock faces. Do you know what X or V are in Roman numerals?

We are Scientists

Today we have had a lot of fun exploring forces and magnets. Weā€™ve learnt how magnets have a North and South Pole and which ends attract and repel. We were fascinated to discover that magnets donā€™t need to touch to attract. They work through all kinds of materials, even Kiaraā€™s hair!

Today we have made predictions about which objects are magnetic and not and cant wait to test out our theories tomorrow. Watch this space for our results!

We also discovered an interesting fact about magnets and coins. Newer coins are all magnetic but some older ones are not. Do you know why?

Postcards for perseverance and presentation today were awarded to Julita and Laci-Maee. Both girls have written heart-felt letters from polar bears. They have used their phonics skills to spell out words and made some lovely word choices.

We are Scientists

Today 3LS have been exploring the effects of global warming through a science experiment. We placed ice-cubes in different areas around school to discover what affect temperature rises would have on the rate the ice melted. Children have amazed me with their scientific enquiry skills and the conclusions they have drawn. They are really aware of the impact humans have on their planet and are determined to help save it!

    We have been listening to and critiquing songs and music by famous artists. Children have really enjoyed sharing ideas and feelings about the tempo, pitch and rhythm of music and working out the stories within the lyrics. Can you find any famous songs at home about our beautiful planet?

      Children in 3LS have been working really hard in English, both today and yesterday. Ara showed great speaking and listening skills, listening to songs by famous artists and sharing his thoughts. Homam has amazed us all today by independently writing his name on his work for the first time.
