There were lots of happy faces today enjoying an ice pop treat. These are my superstar readers who have improved in their reading. They enjoyed cooling down with an ice pop.

Year 2 finally managed to get out of school to go on an adventure in the woods. We explored the woods and learnt all about orienteering and how we can use maps and compasses to help us to navigate our way around. The children were brilliant at it and could easily work out sensible paths to find their way around. Mrs Melady’s group were the first group back!
In the afternoon we went to build a woodland fort using wood, rope and tarpaulins. Once the fort was constructed, the workers needed to be fed! The children roasted pineapple over the open fire and they caramelised their cinnamon sugar until it was crunchy and delicious. This was followed up with fresh, fire-popped popcorn, which was also sprinkled with salt and sugar. Delicious! As if that wasn’t enough, we had one final treat of open-fire toasted marshmallows, which we made into awesome chocolate s’mores. They were definitely a success because the children saved some on their faces for later! The workers then returned to the fort to become soldiers. They pulled up the drawbridge and created leaf crowns to protect themselves in battle. They created some ingenious designs! By this point we were all buzzing with sugar so just about had the energy to march all of the way back to school. What a great day!

Over the Summer holidays, children have been invited to write a short story. The competition has been set up with Good Housekeeping Magazine in collaboration with the National Literacy Trust.
To enter, parents or guardians need to submit their child’s story on the theme of Christmas. This is a chance for children to let their creativity run wild and come up with something really original and exciting.
The competition is split into four age categories: seven and under, eight to 10-year-olds, 11 to 13-year-olds and 14 to 16-year-olds. Those aged seven and under are invited to send in a drawing and a few sentences, while those in the other three categories can submit up to 500 words on a Christmas theme of their choice. Each age category will be considered separately by our panel of judges, who will be looking for the most creative entries in each group. Winning stories will be published in the December 2023 issue of Good Housekeeping and each category winner will also receive £100 worth of book tokens.
What to send: Send us your child’s story of no more than 500 words (this can include a drawing if your child is seven or under) on the theme of Christmas. Please include the name of the parent or guardian, the name and date of birth of the child, the age category being entered and a mobile or daytime contact number for the parent or guardian.
Send your entry here: [email protected] by 31 August 2023. In the email, please include the following information:
The children have been learning about the artwork of Peter Thorpe this week. The children in Mr Pickering’s group had produced a first draft of their interpretation of a Peter Thorpe style drawing. Mr Longley’s group then came into see the children’s drafts and they showed them their work. They were the experts and they explained the choices they had made in their draft and how it was inspired by what they had learnt. This allowed Mr Longley’s group to go and produce their own drafts having learnt and listened to their peers. Great work!

We had another very successful family reading event on Friday afternoon. It was well attended and it was lovely to see so many adults sharing books and reading with the children. Well done everyone!

This week, Year 2 have been artists. They have been exploring the work of Peter Thorpe, who specialises in space-themed artwork.
Today, some of Year 2 have used pastels to create their first piece of artwork inspired by Peter. They have been learning how to do key techniques such as blending.
It has been such a privilege to watch the Y2 children do their Final Word presentations for the past two weeks. The children were outstanding and we were so proud of each and every one of them. The parents who came all left with big smiles on their faces and some even had a few tears in their eyes!
We are so proud of every child in Y2 and we have loved getting to know you all.
Watch out Year 3, superstars are heading your way! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
