Lightning Squad

What a great start to our half term. Itā€™s only the second day back and Iā€™ve already awarded four certificates for fantastic phonics and reading in The Lightning Squad.

Well done to Julita, Jerzie, Baran and Conor!

Look out for Lightning Squad letters so you can continue learning by logging on at home. You can claim your home learning hours on childrenā€™s university for this activity with stamp code ORANGE0161

Cracking ‘Eggs’periments in 4G

We have moved onto learning about the human body and we are starting with teeth.

We completed a couple of experiments this afternoon to investigate our teeth.

First, we investigated how different substances can affect our teeth. We used eggs to represent our teeth and submerged them in different liquids. We had an egg in water as a control and then we used coffee, cola, orange juice, mouth wash, vinegar and an energy drink. We need to leave the eggs in the liquid for a while to see if there are any changes, but it was interesting to see how the vinegar and the energy drink started fizzy bubbles on the egg shell and foaming straight away, when the water did nothing. It will be interesting to see if our predictions actually happen.

After that, we then looked at how well we clean our teeth. We cleaned our teeth first then used a disclosing tablet to show up any areas we may have missed. We all ended up with bright pink mouths and tongues – but our teeth were beautifully clean!

We look forward to learning more about our amazing bodies.

World Book Day

World Book Day will be celebrated on 2nd March 2023. Children are invited to dress up if they wold like to as their favourite book character. Please do not feel any pressure to buy costumes (children can wear uniform as normal if they wish). Children are also welcome to make a badge, wear a themed t-shirt or make an accessory from their favourite story or that their favourite character uses! We will celebrate as a school throughout the day and all children will receive the Ā£1 book token that they can exchange for a World Book Day special edition book, which are available to buy in local bookshops and supermarkets.

Please take a look at the amazing competition detailed below as part of World Book Day!

World Book DayĀ® is helping to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Cressida Cowellā€™s How to Train Your Dragon with a truly magical prize. One lucky winner will have the change to go on a 3-day family trip to Soltau in Germany to stay at Heide Park, the theme park that is home to an entire land based around How to Train Your Dragon. https://www.worldbookday.com/howtotrainyourdragon/

Wonderful Writing in 4G

Well done guys! You have been working really hard this week on your two-page spreads about plants.

You are really showing off all the learning we have been doing over the last few weeks.

I can’t wait to read the finished explanation texts.

Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush!!!

On the first Monday back after half term, all children in Year 3 and Year 4 are going to seeing how clean their teeth are.

We will be using a disclosing tablet and then the children will be able to see any areas where they have missed brushing their teeth.

To ensure all children can take part in this activity, please could you send your child’s toothbrush and toothpaste in a small named plastic bag.

if your child is unable to use a disclosing tablet, please could you inform your class teacher in advance.

Thanks

Super Science in 4G

We have been true scientists this week.

We have conducted several investigations into plants – how they live, grow and reproduce.

First, we planted cress seeds in different conditions to explore what they need to survive. Then, we observed how water travels through the xylem in plants from the roots to the leaves by experimenting with celery and food dye. Finally, we dissected flowers to learn about the different parts and how they contribute to pollination and creating new plants.

Who would have thought there was so much to learn from a humble flower!

4G Hooking into Plants

This week, we have finished learning about electronics and moved on to our second case study – biology.

We have started by looking at plants and we had good fun immersing ourselves in plants, by looking at the book ‘A seed is sleepy’. This prompted us to write adjective poems to describe flowers and then decorate our poems with watercolours.

The final work is very striking and I can’t wait to get them up on display.

Well done 4G – Beautiful Work!

The Really Really Big Really Really Small Show

This afternoon, Year 4 had the opportunity to join a science webinar.

We had a fascinating talk about the language of science, particularly the words that are used to describe very very large objects and microscopic objects.

The scientists taught us all something new and it generated a great conversation about how we become scientists.

Thank you Year 4 for you great attention and focus.
