Retrieval Questions

  1. What 3 things was the garden to the gardener? (Use pages 5 and 6 to help you)
  2. Was the gardener good at gardening? Can you find evidence in the text to support your answer?
  3. What blossomed in the garden?
  4. How long did the gardener sleep for?
  5. What had happened to the gardener when he woke up?

Inference Questions

The gardener felt incredibly sad about his garden beginning to die and he made a wish.

Have a think about being the gardener. I wonder if you have felt like him before? That you are trying really hard but things are still not going quite right somehow.

How do you think the gardener must have felt seeing all his garden die? I wonder if you can write your answer in a full sentence?

Now I would like you to think about what the gardener must have wished for when he closed his eyes.

What do you think that he wished for? Can you write your answer in a full sentence?

Extra Task.

Can you draw a picture showing how you think the gardener wanted the garden to look when he woke up?

Tuesday 7th July

Good morning Key Stage One.

Here is our new text, ‘The Little Gardener’ by Emily Gravett.

Today’s task is to write some descriptive sentences about the garden.

We are going to use noun phrases and expanded noun phrases to do this. We have practiced noun phrases before. I wonder what you can remember?

Noun Phrase Example

Noun Phrase

‘the worm’

Expanded Noun Phrase

The slippery worm.

I can use one adjective to describe the noun. Here the noun is the worm. The adjective is slippery.

The slimy, slippery worm.

I can use more than one adjective in my expanded noun phrase.

I have used a comma (,) to separate my adjectives.

Today’s Task

Have a go at writing a noun phrase for each of the following pictures.

For an extra challenge, why not try writing an expanded noun phrase? Don’t forget to use a comma!

Monday 6th July

Good morning Key Stage One.

This week, we will be looking at our final text.

In preparation for this, we would like you to have a go at designing your own garden. What would it look like? What sorts of flowers, fruits and vegetables might grow in it?

When you have designed your garden, can you think about some sentences which will describe the garden you have designed?

For example;

My garden has yummy strawberries growing in it.

I have included sunflowers in my garden because they make me feel happy when I look at them.

Please send your pictures to [email protected] when you have completed today’s task. We can’t wait to see your work!
