We Are Scientists

Today we tasted our gingerbread men that we baked yesterday. We spoke about how the state of the gingerbread changed from; being ingredients, to crumb like, to a dough, to going hard in the oven. We used our senses to explore how the cooked gingerbread felt, looked, smelt and tasted. We went on to make predications about what would happen if we was to put our gingerbread man in water. We got some excellent answers such as; go soft and change colour. We then used our senses again to explore the wet gingerbread man, and see if our predications were correct.

We are scientists

Today, we conducted a scientific experiment to see what sides of the magnet attract and repel each other. We also found out that Earth is one big magnet, because there is iron in the middle of Earth.

Reading for Pleasure

In Crew this morning, children enjoyed sharing one of their favourite books while having a biscuit. We discussed why reading is so important and why we should read as often as we can. It was great to see children reading for pleasure and lovely to find out their reasons for choosing their book.

Gingerbread Man baking

We had 2 expert bakers to visit us to teach us how to make Gingerbread men. We learnt new words and remembered ingredients and equipment. We then had a go at baking some. We weighed the ingredients, rubbed the butter into the flour, mixed in the other ingredients and made the dough. We rolled and cut and baked. Finally, we ate them. They were delicious!

Summer Expedition

After the Easter holidays our expedition will be based around the guiding question “what happens when the sea meets the shore?” As part of this we will be talking about children’s experiences of visiting the seaside. If you are out and about anywhere over the Easter holidays, or have any old holiday photos of your child, we would appreciate it if you could share these with your class teacher. These can be shared via Evidence Me or a printed copy, so that they can use these to support their learning.

Thank you, EYFS team

Expert Baker

Yesterday we had nana Bubb and grandma Sherene in as expert bakers, to show us how to bake gingerbread. They taught us lots of clever baking tips and explained the process of measuring the ingredients to us and we discussed how the ingredients changed state. We practised kneading the dough ready for making our own.

After watching nana Bubb and grandma Sherene we had a go at baking our own gingerbread men, following a recipe. We spoke about the measurements we needed and the importance of washing our hands first. We practised using our mathematical language, such as first and then, and used our senses to feel/smell/touch the ingredients.

Pond Habitats

This week the children have been enjoying finding out about the lifecycle of a frog and about the habitat they live in. The children designed some brilliant pond habitats that included food sources, protection from predators, shelter for frogspawn and tadpoles and a source of fresh water.

Here are some of the children’s ideas.
