Attract or Repel?

3LS have been diving deeper into our expedition today, exploring magnets and properties of magnetic materials. We’ve been predicting and testing which objects will be attracted and repelled by magnets. Did you know that not all metals are attracted to magnets? We found a 1p from 1971 that was not attracted to a magnet and a 1p from 1998 that was. Even more amazingly, we have discovered that magnets can attract objects from a distance and even through other objects! The force can attract a penny through two other coins.

What time is it?

This week we have been learning about time. Today we made our own clocks with moving hour and minute hands. We’re going to bring them home with some home learning and parent guides. It would be great if we could practice telling the time at home too!

Next up we will be adding Roman numerals to our clock faces. Do you know what X or V are in Roman numerals?

We are Scientists

Today we have had a lot of fun exploring forces and magnets. We’ve learnt how magnets have a North and South Pole and which ends attract and repel. We were fascinated to discover that magnets don’t need to touch to attract. They work through all kinds of materials, even Kiara’s hair!

Today we have made predictions about which objects are magnetic and not and cant wait to test out our theories tomorrow. Watch this space for our results!

We also discovered an interesting fact about magnets and coins. Newer coins are all magnetic but some older ones are not. Do you know why?

Today, we have been scientists by investigating forces.

We have conducted experiments into how objects move over different surfaces and learnt about how friction affects their movement.

We concluded that the smoother the surface, the less friction there is, so the further it moves.

Proud Postcard Winners

Postcards for perseverance and presentation today were awarded to Julita and Laci-Maee. Both girls have written heart-felt letters from polar bears. They have used their phonics skills to spell out words and made some lovely word choices.
