Year 2 finally managed to get out of school to go on an adventure in the woods. We explored the woods and learnt all about orienteering and how we can use maps and compasses to help us to navigate our way around. The children were brilliant at it and could easily work out sensible paths to find their way around. Mrs Melady’s group were the first group back!
In the afternoon we went to build a woodland fort using wood, rope and tarpaulins. Once the fort was constructed, the workers needed to be fed! The children roasted pineapple over the open fire and they caramelised their cinnamon sugar until it was crunchy and delicious. This was followed up with fresh, fire-popped popcorn, which was also sprinkled with salt and sugar. Delicious! As if that wasn’t enough, we had one final treat of open-fire toasted marshmallows, which we made into awesome chocolate s’mores. They were definitely a success because the children saved some on their faces for later! The workers then returned to the fort to become soldiers. They pulled up the drawbridge and created leaf crowns to protect themselves in battle. They created some ingenious designs! By this point we were all buzzing with sugar so just about had the energy to march all of the way back to school. What a great day!
