Actively promoting British Values at Plover Primary School

Our value led curriculum actively promotes the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs as set out by the government that sits alongside our work within the spiritual, moral, social and cultural agenda.

Through our curriculum and relevant to the child’s needs and understanding we:

Democracy:

• Provide the children with a broad general knowledge of, and promote respect for, public institutions and service

• Teach pupils how they can influence and become involved in decision making through the democratic process at all levels including through the School Council (who are voted in by their peers) and ensure they are listened to and are able to express their views in a mutually supportive environment

• Involve all our stakeholders in school decision processes

• Study how democracy works in Britain

• Model how perceived injustice can be properly and peacefully challenged

• Use debate and philosophical thinking to promote democracy

• Know how public services operate and how everyone can be held to account
  

Rule of Law:

• Ensure our school rules and expectations are clear, fair and displayed around school. Individual classes also create their own class rules at the start of every year
• Help pupils distinguish right from wrong
• Encourage the children to respect the law and show them how living under the rule of law protects individuals
• Arrange visits from the police, fire and other services as part of the PSHE curriculum
• Promote the importance of rules across the curriculum e.g. fair testing in Science, rules in sports activities

Individual Liberty:

• Develop children’s self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence in a safe and supported environment, where they are supported and given the freedom to make choices
• Encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour and the choices they make including any consequences that follow, using restorative justice methodology where appropriate
• Promote pupil participation at many levels including the School Council, reading buddies and Playleaders
• Challenge stereotypes and challenge discriminatory and prejudicial behaviours e.g. visits to different places of worship
• Promote respect of individual differences
• Implement a strong anti-bullying culture
• Encourage pupils to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise them how to exercise these safely, for example through our E‐Safety and PSHE lessons. Alongside this we develop an understanding of individual and collective responsibilities

Mutual Respect and Tolerance:

• Promote respect for individual differences and develop links with other faith communities

• Help pupils acquire an understanding and mutual respect for their own and other cultures and ways of life

• Challenge discriminatory behaviour

• Organise visits to a range of places of worship

• Develop and promote critical thinking skills

• Discuss and celebrate differences between people including faith, ethnicity, disability, gender / sexuality, family situations
  

At Plover Primary we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views.
